Gionee M7 Power Review

So far in 2017, we have seen a shift in smartphone design, with more and more manufacturers slowly moving towards 18:9 displays. This usually involves narrower borders around a phone's screen, giving it a near bezel-less look. Gionee is the latest to go with the trend, with the Gionee M7 Power. The advantage as a consumer is that you get one more smartphone to choose from in the sub Rs. 20,000 segment.
What is different with this phone in particular, is that it has a big battery as well as a big screen. Gionee’s Power models are well known for their long battery life, and the M7 Power seems to have what it takes to live up to this reputation. We put the Gionee M7 Power to the test to see exactly what it has on offer.

Gionee M7 Power design

Gionee M7 Power's big 6-inch display has an 18:9 aspect ratio and HD+ resolution of 720x1440 pixels. Gionee has used an IPS panel and so the phone reproduces colours well and has good viewing angles. The tall screen has thin borders on the sides but the top and bottom are relatively thicker. Gionee has used the bottom for its branding, placing the fingerprint scanner at the back and using on-screen navigation buttons. The fingerprint scanner is quick to unlock the device, but we found its positioning - and that of the the volume buttons on the right - a bit too high, which means you may find yourself stretching your fingers.
Gionee has rounded off the corners, while the edges have been chamfered to make this phone easier to grip. Its flat metal back hides a 5000mAh battery, while the plastic caps at the top and the bottom eliminate the need for antenna lines. Thanks to its big battery, the Gionee M7 Power weighs 199g and it will definitely make its presence felt in your hand. The band that runs around the sides is made of plastic but the power and volume buttons have a metallic feel to them.
You get a single speaker positioned alongside the 3.5mm headphone jack and Micro-USB port at the bottom. Gionee has also added an Infrared emitter on the top, which can be used to control compatible appliances.

Gionee M7 Power specifications and features

The Gionee M7 uses a Snapdragon 435 SoC, which has eight Cortex-A53 cores and is known to be efficient. Phones such as the Xiaomi Redmi 4 (Review) and the LG Q6 (Review) are powered by the same processor.  You also get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage which is expandable by to 256GB using the Hybrid dual-SIM slot. The phone has two Nano-SIM slots, one of which can hold a microSD card as well. There is support for 4G and VoLTE on both SIMs but only one at a time. You get Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, and USB-OTG.
Gionee ships its own Amigo 5.0 UI on top of Android Nougat. The UI has been tweaked since we reviewed the Gionee A1 Plus, and the quick settings are now accessible by swiping down from the notification area instead of the iOS-like Command Centre. You don’t get an app drawer and all icons are available right on the homescreen. The settings app is customised to some extent, which might take some time getting used to. All custom features on the M7 Power are grouped separately allowing you to explore them in one go.

Just like older Gionee phones, gesture control is built in, allowing you to double-tap to wake the phone or draw alphabets when the screen is off to launch apps. There is an App Clone option as well, which lets you run two instances of the same app. You can also put the big battery of the M7 Power to use by enabling reverse charging and plug other devices in like you would with a power bank.

Private Space is yet another addition to the software. It lets you hide contacts, messages, notes and call recordings using a separate fingerprint or passcode. This space can be accessed from the lockscreen by using the particular fingerprint, or by doing a two-finger swipe in the aforementioned apps.
There is significant bloatware preinstalled on the phone, including UC News, Xender, Gaana, Messenger, Truecaller, Flipkart and demo versions of a few games. Thankfully, you can uninstall these to free up some space and reduce clutter.

Gionee M7 Power performance, battery life, and cameras

We found the hardware on the M7 Power to be good and did not face any lag or stuttering during the duration of our testing. The processor manages to run apps and games well enough. Having 4GB of RAM is a good advantage and the M7 Power makes the most of it by holding apps in memory when not actively used. Relaunch times are quite good as a result.
The processor isn't exactly entry-level, but it does come in below the options more commonly seen at this price level. We ran Antutu and managed to score 45,682 points, while Geekbench 4's single-core and multi-core tests gave us 679 and 2,590 respectively. During our use, the big battery on the phone went on for a whole day with medium to heavy use with still around 50 percent left at the end. In our HD video loop test, the M7 Power managed to go on for close to 17 hours.
Gionee has equipped the M7 Power with a 13-megapixel rear camera and a single LED flash and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The camera app is basic and has different shooting modes to choose from. Apart from the usual Photo, Video and Panorama modes there is Face Beauty, Group Selfie and a Card Scanner mode. You also have different settings and a professional mode which lets you individually control different parameters of the camera. The Auto Scene Detection option switches to night mode and toggles HDR automatically based on lighting conditions. Gionee has also added a 2x zoom control in the camera app, which is done digitally.

Photos taken in daylight are sharp and have a good amount of detail, but you can see grain on zooming in. Auto HDR does help in getting better output if you are patient, but we did notice that the phone struggled with metering. Low-light photos are average - the phone manages to keep noise levels low but at the cost of detail.

Selfies are strictly average, and those taken indoors look grainy. The M7 Power has a 3D Photo option which requires you to move the camera around an object to capture it in 3D. These didn’t turn out great and it looked like the phone records a short video while allowing you to scrub through it. Video recording maxes out at 1080p for both the cameras, and you also have the option to record slow-motion video.
Verdict
The Gionee M7 Power is a good smartphone but at Rs. 16,999, it does seem to be overpriced. We were impressed with the battery life, but the UI and the cameras don't live up to the standard set by the competition. Around this price, all rounders like the Moto G5S Plus (Review) or Xiaomi Mi A1 (Review) would be more obvious picks for most buyers. However, if battery life is your number one priority, then the Gionee M7 Power would be a better choice.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A launched: Full specs, top features, India price

Xiaomi launched the Redmi 4A successor, aka the Redmi 5A, in India on Thursday. The Redmi 5A is a little different from the Redmi 4A however even though it shares much of the hardware specs with its predecessor phone. Xiaomi is touting the Redmi 5A as 'Desh ka Smartphone' or a smartphone that has been designed from grounds up for India. It is directed towards first-time smartphone users and users who are looking to switch from a feature phone to a smartphone, without having to spend a fortune on a good handset.
The Redmi 5A, although it's an entry-level phone, doesn't compromise much in terms of hardware specs. In fact, at its price point, the Redmi 5A is the most powerful phone that money can buy, and a build quality to match if not better than newly launched phones at similar prices like the Nokia 2. Here's a quick look.

Specifications:

Processor: The Redmi 5A is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor clubbed with Adreno 308 GPU. This is the same core hardware that was also inside its predecessor, the Redmi 4A.

RAM: The Redmi 5A will be available in two RAM variants in India: 2GB and 3GB.

Internal storage: The Redmi 5A will be available in two storage variants in India: 16GB and 32GB, both further expandable by up to 128GB via a dedicated micro-SD card slot.

Screen: The Redmi 5A comes with a 5-inch 720p IPS LCD display.

Rear camera: The phone comes with a 13-megapixel camera on the rear with f/2.2 aperture, Phase Detection Autofocus and LED flash. The rear camera is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30fps.

Front camera: On the front, the Redmi 5A comes with a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Software: The phone runs Android Nougat-based MIUI 9.

Battery: The Redmi 5A is backed by a 3,000mAh battery.

Special features:

-- The Redmi 5A is successor to the Redmi 4A and retains much of its predecessor's hardware set as also its ultra-affordable price tag. The Redmi 5A -- launched in India -- is banking heavily on the fact that it's a "Desh Ka Smartphone" which invariably means that it is designed for India, and will be made (assembled) in India as well. Xiaomi, to recall, now assembles a considerable chunk of phones that it sells in India -- more than 90 per cent, according to Xiaomi -- here in the country itself.
-- The made 'for' India aspect also stems from the fact that although the Redmi 5A launched in India shares much of the hardware specs with the Redmi 5A that's already available in China, the one that will sell (and will be made) in India will come with some India-specific nuggets likely to appeal to India's masses. The Redmi 5A India version, will for one, come with a dedicated slot for two nano SIM cards and one micro-SD card for storage expansion. Secondly, the 3GB RAM/32GB storage version of the Redmi 5A is an India-exclusive since in China only one 2GB RAM/16GB variant is available.

Samsung technology can charge your smartphone battery in just 12 minutes

Samsung has a new technology and it gives your smartphone battery 5 times the charging speed. The new technology by Samsung is called as "graphene ball" and it increases the charging speed of your phone.

Samsung has a new technology and it gives your smartphone battery 5 times the charging speed. The new technology by Samsung is called as “graphene ball” and it increases the charging speed of your phone. The new feature also spikes the battery capacity by a whopping 45 percent. The new material is called graphene which is an allotrope of Carbon. It has long been considered to be an alternative to Silicon and other forms of carbon, especially for processors and batteries. Now, the Korean electronics giant has discovered a great potential for it.
Samsung’s graphene ball technology has the potential to be used in the next generation of smartphone batteries, the company has revealed in a press release. The development avenues, according to Samsung, include mobile devices and electric vehicles. The technology was developed by researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), in collaboration with Samsung SDI and the Seoul National University’s School of Chemical and Biological Engineering. The company has claimed that theoretically, graphene ball-based batteries need just 12 minutes to fully charge. This means it could turn out to be revolutionary for both smartphones and electric vehicles.

Samsung has said that when compared to the usual lithium-ion powered batteries, graphene ball-based batteries are cooler while running and can maintain a stable temperature of 60-degrees Celsius. It could help in “stable battery temperatures [are] particularly key for electric vehicles.”

Samsung has explained the technology as: “This ‘graphene ball’ was utilised for both the anode protective layer and cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. This ensured an increase of charging capacity, a decrease of charging time as well as stable temperatures.”
Meanwhile, Dr Son In-hyuk, who led the project for SAIT, said, “Our research enables mass synthesis of multifunctional composite material graphene at an affordable price. At the same time, we were able to considerably enhance the capabilities of lithium-ion batteries in an environment where the markets for mobile devices and electric vehicles is growing rapidly.”

YouTube Claims iPhone Battery Issues Are Fixed in Latest App Update

Earlier this month, YouTube came in for heavy criticism after multiple users of its mobile app reported plummeting battery life on their iPhones and iPads. iPhone X users in particular said the YouTube app caused their device to run much hotter than usual when watching videos. YouTube admitted there was a battery-draining bug that it was working to fix, and today the service claims to have done just that.

Version 12.45 of the app was pushed out to users this morning with the accompanying note "Fixed an issue with battery usage". We haven't had enough time with the app to confirm the issue is indeed fixed across all devices, but initial tests on an iPhone X running iOS 11.1.1 seem to support YouTube's claims.

Some users had complained that YouTube was sucking the life out of their phones even while it was running in the background, although it's unclear if that was limited to when users were casting video to a smart TV. Let us know how you get on with the updated YouTube app in the comments below.

Living On Mars: MIT Team Takes Top Prize In Martian City Design Contest

One day people may live on Mars, but what will their habitat look like? According to researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the future Martian city will rely on a lot of trees.
The tree-inspired concept—called Redwood Forest—took the first place prize in the architecture category of the 2017 Mars City Design competition, Space.com reports. In the NASA and European Space Agency sponsored contest, the Ivy League team created a sustainable urban space that astronauts and other pioneers may one day call home.
“On Mars, our city will physically and functionally mimic a forest, using local Martian resources such as ice and water, regolith (or soil), and sun to support life. Designing a forest also symbolizes the potential for outward growth as nature spreads across the Martian landscape,” MIT postdoctoral researcher Valentina Sumini, who co-led the project, said in a statement. “Each tree habitat incorporates a branching structural system and an inflated membrane enclosure, anchored by tunneling roots.”

In this handout illustration provided by NASA/JPL, an artist's conception of the Phoenix Mars Lander on the Red Planet. Phoenix is slated to land on Mars on May 25, 2008. Launched in the summer of 2007 the lander will join the twin Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity and will study whether permafrost could have supported primitive life on the planet.

The domes or tree habitats would be large enough for 50 people to live inside of them. In their blueprint, the team of nine students proposes about 200 of the structures would be built, providing shelter for 10,000 people, according to Futurism. In order for the environment to thrive, one key ingredient is necessary: water.
“Every tree habitat in Redwood Forest will collect energy from the sun and use it to process and transport the water throughout the tree, and every tree is designed as a water-rich environment,” George Lordos, a doctoral student who worked on the project, said in a statement. “Water fills the soft cells inside the dome providing protection from radiation, helps manage heat loads, and supplies hydroponic farms for growing fish and greens.”
Lordos also notes that solar panels would play a vital role in providing energy on the Red Planet, especially if dust storms were to hit. Their blueprint could also help us Earthlings too, the designers report. In particular, they believe the tree domes could help people living in high latitudes and deserts, among other places.
The Mars City Design contest seeks to explore feasible options that humans could potentially thrive in.

Google announces scholarship programme in India to train 1.3 lakh students

Sensing the need to skill the Indian talent for emerging technologies, Google, in association with technology learning platform Pluralsight and educational institution Udacity, on Thursday announced a new scholarship programme that will help train 1.3 lakh developers and students across the country.
As part of the programme, Google will fund 100,000 scholarships on the Pluralsight technology learning platform and 30,000 scholarships on Udacity platform. The scholarship would enable students gain access to advanced learning curriculum and further their employability in mobile and web development, machine learning, augmented and virtual reality, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cloud platforms.

The new scholarship programme is in tandem with Google’s aim to train two million developers in India. The country is the second largest developer ecosystem in the world and is bound to overtake the US by 2021,” William Florance, Developer Products Group and Skilling Lead for India, Google, told reporters here.

In 2015, Google CEO Sundar Pichai had stated that the global Internet search engine giant will train 2 million new android developers in the next three years in India.

“In the last one year, we have engaged over half a million students and developers across India through a variety of programmes and initiatives. Since we announced our skilling initiative in India, 210,000 students have completed Google developed courses on Udacity, with 117,000 students completing the course this year,” Florance informed.

With Udacity, 1,000 developers will also be selected to receive full Nanodegree scholarships.

Unlike China, India is lagging in innovation but is adopting technologies faster. There is an urgent need to upskill and reskill India’s technology workforce,” Florance said.

According to Arun Rajamani, Country Head and General Manager, Pluralsight, India’s tech workforce is going through a phase of transition.

We are thrilled to partner with Google to help developers across India understand their skill level using Pluralsight IQ and advance their skill sets in four key roles: Android Developer, Mobile Web Specialist, Cloud Architect and Data Engineer,” Rajamani said.

“With this scholarship programme, students can master web and mobile development skills with the experts from Udacity and Google,” added Ishan Gupta, Managing Director-Udacity India.

YouTube cracks down on child exploitation content

Cracking down on abuse and child-exploiting channels and videos, YouTube on Wednesday announced it will remove content on the platform that attempts to pass as being “friendly for kids”.

“While some of these videos may be suitable for adults, others are completely unacceptable, so we are working to remove them from YouTube,” Johanna Wright, Vice President of Product Management, YouTube, wrote in a blog post.

The Google-owned company will apply machine learning technology and automated tools in order to discover potentially exploitive content. YouTube has terminated 50 channels and removed thousands of videos as also advertisements from 5,00,000 exploitive videos under the current set of guidelines. The company will also continue to work with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to report potentially illegal behaviour to law enforcement, said Wright.

Meanwhile, YouTube Kids announced new measures last week for parents if they find children watching inappropriate videos at home even by mistake. If the user is signed in while reporting a video, it will also be blocked from the YouTube Kids app, the company said in a statement.

“When you block a video or channel, you will no longer see that video on the YouTube Kids apps when you are signed in. You can always clear your blocked videos and channels from Settings if you change your mind,” the company had said

Google Home to get two new interesting features soon

Amazon recently launched its smart speaker, Amazon Echo Plus in India. We have already used the device, and it seems pretty cool.
However, we can't wait for Google to bring its smart home speaker Google Home to India. Especially, when the device is getting new features. According to a support page, Google Home is gaining some new functionality. The support page of Google Home has been updated listing some new features that will be added to the device shortly. The features are Direct Control and Scene Support.

Direct Control:

Google Home will soon get direct control over more smart devices. While the device has already had this feature, up until now, it could only control limited things like lights, smart switches, security cameras, and thermostats. As per the support page, the scenario is about to change.
Currently, Google Home can control smart washer, dryer, vacuum, or dishwasher through the voice commands of someone. So basically, someone would have to ask the device to talk to another service to perform a certain action. For this, the person would have to use the exact same phrases the service uses instead of depending on Google's natural language processing to relay their command.
With Direct Control feature, on the other hand, someone can just give direct command to Google Home and then it will pass on the command to the relevant device. For example, in case of a thermostat, a direct command like "Hey Google, turn the heat up", will do the needful.

Scenes:

The support page also reveals that Google Home may add scenes support in future. The device could gain the ability to activate and deactivate scenes. For those who are not aware, scenes allow you to save a predetermined brightness and color ahead of time so you can recall them later. The support page further details the commands needed to control scenes.

A Bird's Story: How to Get Lost in the Pacific and Create Entirely New Species

In an incredible story, one bird got lost at sea and ended up creating an entirely new species on a remote island in the Pacific, shocking the science community.

On a remote island called Daphne Major in the Galapagos chain, back in 1981, a team of researchers noticed a strange bird that didn’t look like anything typically found on the island. It was larger than and built differently to the few bird species that were already living there, according to a report published in Sciencemag.org.
The bird also sounded different, so it was clear that it wasn’t from Daphne Major, but its origins were unknown. The scientists caught and tested the bird’s blood and to their shock realized that the bird was a hybrid of two different species of birds.
It all started with one brave finch that decided to explore other islands and flew off to find a new mate among the native finch species on Daphne Major. That resulted in offspring that was a mix of two birds. These new unnamed birds were called simply Big Birds because they were larger than the native species.

However, when these Big Birds reached maturity they couldn’t find mates because they couldn’t repeat the song of the native finches; they were also different in size and that prevented them from attracting partners.
They did manage to attract each other, and that interbreeding resulted in more and more Big Birds on the island. Today, six generations later, these hybrids are their very own established species.

This incredible case gave scientists insight into how new species can form much faster than was previously imagined.
The assumption that it takes hundreds of generations to create a new species is now debatable, as the ongoing study of the Big Birds has revealed that it takes as little as three generations for an entirely new species to develop.

Earthquakes Predicted In 2018 As Earth’s Rotation Slows

Even a tiny slowdown in Earth's rotation could trigger more earthquakes than usual, says study

Earth’s rotation is slowing down few milliseconds every day. Although such fluctuations in rotations are minor, they could have far-reaching impact. And a new research suggests that the gradual slowdown could lead to more strong earthquakes next year.

One thing that almost all scientists agree on is that no one can figure out when a destructive earthquake will occur. However, two geologists have uncovered a distant pattern that might explain the overall trend of future earthquakes. Using the record of major earthquakes over the past 100 years, researchers have drawn a strong link between Earth’s rotation and seismic activity. They have found that tiny variations in the speed of Earth’s rotation could trigger intense seismic activity and release a vast amount of underground energy.
“The numbers of earthquakes that have occurred each year in the past century are well known. The changes in Earth's rotation rate are also well known," study co-author Roger Bilham, a geophysicist at the University of Colorado Boulder told Live Science. "All we have done is to compare these two well-known lists of numbers and report an interesting and useful relationship.”
For the study, researchers looked at the history of earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater since 1900. They found that our planet experienced between 25 and 35 strong earthquakes every year throughout that period. Surprisingly, the increase in seismic activity coincided with times when the Earth spun more slowly.
The Earth’s rotation is usually consistent, but it does go through times when it rotates a little slower than normal. Currently, Earth is entering a prolonged period of rotational slowdown. As a result, we can expect to see an average of 20 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater in the next four years.
In 2018 the Earth will reach its slowest rotational speed before it starts to speed up again
