Google’s New Datally App Tells Business Owners How to Save on Data Usage

Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) just built an app called Datally so you can better manage and track the data on your mobile device.
Datally is designed to address three important facets of mobile data usage. It lets you understand, control and save on the data you use as part of your plan. Google is making the app available globally after testing it for the past few months in the Philippines. The company said users saved up to 30 percent on their data.
If you are running a small business on a tight budget, trying to figure out what’s sapping your mobile data can be a difficult proposition. The control measures Google has introduced in Datally can be used to see how you and your employees are doing with your mobile devices when it comes to data usage. Depending on the type of plan you have, the Google app can cut the cost of your mobile data bill every month.
Caesar Sengupta, Vice President of the Next Billion Users Team at Google, addressed the issue of mobile data cost and usage on the company blog recently. He said, “Mobile data is expensive for many people around the world. And what’s worse, it’s hard to figure out where it all goes. That means you’re never just chatting, playing games or watching videos on your phone — you’re also anxiously keeping an eye on how long your data will last.”

What Does Google Datally Do for You?

You can now better understand your data because Datally lets you see how much of it you use on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis. It can also give you personalized recommendations to save more.
Once you understand how you are consuming the data, Datally gives you more control. When you are using your apps, you can block background data usage and track real-time data usage. And if there is an app using too much data, all it takes is a single tap to block it.
The next step is to help you save your data. Datally makes this possible by letting you know if you are close to a public WiFi and connecting you. The app has a rating system for public WiFi spots, which is maintained with user participation.

Facebook will save the suicides

The founder of Facebook mark Zuckerberg announced that the social network is embedded in the artificial intelligence and special algorithms will allow to identify potential suicides. He wrote about this in his blog.
“This step is part of the social media giant, aimed at helping to create a safe community Facebook,” said the company.
During the month thanks to new tools experts Facebook contacted more than 100 people who were on the verge of suicide, and emphasize the importance of artificial intelligence that actually saves lives.
How Facebook does it
Algorithms social network very quickly identificeret potential signal (for example, in public messages and comments) and provide relevant data to the Facebook experts that are on call 24 hours a day worldwide.
Artificial intelligence is not limited to the analysis of text messages are also messages in pictures and direct broadcast users.
The company has a team of Community Operations – it includes professionals with special training in mental health issues. They look at the data on possible suicides identified.
According to Dr. Dan Reidenberg if friends, the family of the man to notice disturbing things during the broadcast on Facebook Live, and you see that a person intends to harm themselves or threatening to do something similar, they react to it, leaving certain comments.
“He uses the resources in order to help the streamer and tell the people who are watching the stream, what should they do. On the user’s screen, threatening to commit suicide, a message appears that lists the contact information of the closest center of psychological support or advice on how to cope with stress. That is, the user will be given support,” said the consultant.

Nasa successfully fires Voyager 1 thrusters after 37 years

Experts at Nasa’s jet propulsion laboratory in California decided to turn to four backup thrusters that were last used on 8 November 1980

Washington: Nasa’s Voyager 1 spacecraft—cruising interstellar space billions of miles from earth — was back on the right track on Friday thanks to thrusters that were fired up for the first time in 37 years.
The unmanned spaceship was launched along with its twin, Voyager 2, more than 40 years ago to explore the outer planets of our solar system, travelling further than any human-made object in history.
But after decades of operation, the “attitude control thrusters” that turn the spacecraft by firing tiny “puffs” had degraded. The small adjustments are needed to turn Voyager’s antenna toward earth, allowing it to continue sending communications.
“At 13 billion miles from Earth, there’s no mechanic shop nearby to get a tune-up,” Nasa said in a news release.
Experts at the agency’s jet propulsion laboratory (JPL) in California decided to turn to four backup thrusters that were last used on 8 November 1980.
“The Voyager flight team dug up decades-old data and examined the software that was coded in an outdated assembler language, to make sure we could safely test the thrusters,” said Chris Jones, chief engineer at JPL.
The engineers fired up the thrusters on Tuesday and tested their ability to turn Voyager using 10-millisecond pulses. Then they waited 19 hours, 35 minutes for the test results to arrive at an antenna in Goldstone, California.
Turns out the thrusters worked just fine.
“The Voyager team got more excited each time with each milestone in the thruster test. The mood was one of relief, joy and incredulity after witnessing these well-rested thrusters pick up the baton as if no time had passed at all,” said Todd Barber, a JPL propulsion engineer.
Being able to use the backup thrusters means the lifespan of Voyager 1 has been extended by two or three years, added Suzanne Dodd, project manager for Voyager.
Nasa plans to switch over to the formerly dormant thrusters in January. They will likely also conduct similar tests on the backup thrusters on Voyager 2.
Scientists still hear from the Voyager spacecraft daily, and expect to get data for about another decade.
Astronomy textbooks were rewritten on a wide scale thanks to the Voyager spacecraft, which zoomed past Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus.
The plutonium-powered spaceships will continue until they finally run out of fuel, and will then orbit in the centre of the Milky Way galaxy.

Here’s Something Important You Should Know About Face ID

The Apple iPhone X launched towards the end of the year and grabbed all the attention that iPhones have historically done. With a huge design departure from the previous generations, Apple took an important decision and removed the trusted Touch ID and replaced it with Face ID.
If you own an iPhone X, you’d have your own experience with Face ID and differing opinions about whether it was the right decision or not. But, the fact is that Touch ID is gone, and by the looks of it, it isn’t coming back. One of the many great things about Touch ID was multiple fingerprint support which allowed users to give access to people they trusted.

With Face ID, that options isn’t there yet and if you thought that future software updates will allow that to happen, then you might be wrong in thinking so. According to Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering has conceded that multiple ‘face’ support for Face ID is not a part of Apple’s plans for Face ID.
Someone who missed that Touch ID feature emailed Craig Federighi regarding the same and got this response:
Currently we’re focusing Face ID on a single user authentication. Even TouchID’s multi-finger support was really intended to enable a single iPhone owner to unlock the device with a finger and thumb on both hands, not to enable multi-user authentication. We’ll certainly keep your feedback in mind as we consider our plans to evolve Face ID in the future.
Now, it might be possible that as Apple continues to make Face ID better, it may reach that point where multiple faces can be recognised but, as of now that seems uncertain.

NASA study reveals liquid water below icy surface of Pluto

The curiosity surrounding Pluto never ends. Recent NASA study has revealed the presence of icy worlds in our outer solar system and that there are high probabilities of presence of water below the icy surface.
The reason behind this revelation is based on the assumption that heat generated by the gravitational pull of the moons may have caused collisions which could have extended the liquid water beneath the icy surface.
“These objects need to be considered as potential reservoirs of water and life,” said Prabal Saxena of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, lead author of the research published in Icarus November 24. “If our study is correct, we now may have more places in our solar system that possess some of the critical elements for extraterrestrial life.”
The team used the equations for tidal heating and calculated its contribution to the “heat budget” for a wide variety of discovered and hypothetical TNO-moon systems, including the Eris-Dysnomia system. Eris is second-largest of the currently known TNOs after Pluto.
“We found that tidal heating can be a tipping point that may have preserved oceans of liquid water beneath the surface of large TNOs like Pluto and Eris to the present day,” said Wade Henning of NASA Goddard and the University of Maryland, College Park, a co-author of the study.
The researchers found that the gravitational interaction with a moon can generate enough heat inside a Trans-Neptunian Object to significantly extend the lifetime of a subsurface ocean.
